MERAUKE – Changes happen very slowly in the countryside. This makes lifestyle improvements, especially health, almost impossible to see in this place, if not for the help from the younger generation.
Involving the youth thus became Tunas Sawa Erma Group (TSE Group)’s strategy in conducting health dissemination at PT Papua Agro Lestari (PAL)’s Public Elementary School. Held on Monday (28/11) at the school’s location in Ulilin District, Merauke Regency, the event brought in a young doctor from PT PAL’s clinic, dr. Maria Novilia Basso, to talk about clean and healthy lifestyle.
Excited faces could be seen in the 65-member audience as they followed the lesson from start to finish. On the same occasion, dr. Basso walked them through the proper process of handwashing and teeth-brushing.
This information was important to know as a student, she said, given the significant impact of health and cleanliness on child development. “Properly cleaning your hands, making teeth-brushing a habit, putting trash where it belongs, and consuming nutritious meals are some practices we should instill from a young age,” dr. Basso explained in the session.
Alongside this was a short Civics class, through which Tunas Sawa Erma Group (TSE Group) sought to foster a sense of nationalism and encourage dedication and devotion to the homeland.

All these sessions make up the Social Education program activity, whose purpose is to help nearby students improve their knowledge base. It’s a part of TSE Group’s key Corporate Social Contribution (CSC) programs that are aimed at developing the social environment of Papua’s most outlying communities.
“This [Social Education] activity was valuable for our kids. The lessons inspired them to work harder towards their goals,” said Maikel Yoseph S., a teacher from the school. (Fionny/Bryan/PR)
