BOVEN DIGOEL – Some parts of the Papuan forests hold spiritual values. Indigenous people call them ‘sacred forests’, given an intergenerational belief that spirits of their ancestors dwell deep in the jungle. Thus, these areas are highly guarded by locals and kept sustainable.
PT Tunas Sawa Erma (PT TSE) also took part in the protection efforts. To respect local beliefs, the company conducts preservation activities like monitoring the environment, which includes these forests. Last week, they installed ‘protection’ signage at the woodland edge outside company operational areas, Jair District, Boven Digoel Regency, Papua.
This activity doesn’t only involve company employees, but also nearby residents. Together, they put up warning signpost to protect the sacred grounds. “Putting up a sign helps guard our forest against destruction, and we feel grateful for this. The company has always paid attention to forest conservation efforts in Papua,” said Karlois Mahuse, representing the local community.
Nature preservation is a part of PT Tunas Sawa Erma’s Corporate Social Contribution (CSC) program. It aims to safeguard the natural ecosystem in Papua’s protected forests, which tend to have high conservation value.

“This is our attempt to keep outsiders away from preservation zones outside company areas,” said Jhon Nanlohy, PT Tunas Sawa Erma’s PR staff.
