BOVEN DIGOEL – As part of its attention to local education, palm oil firm Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE) Group runs an annual scholarship program for young members of local clans.

One of its recipients is Ida Igiti, a third-grader from Asiki Subvillage. Donning a huge smile, Ida shared with the PR team how she felt receiving the scholarship money. It has become her source of energy, propelling her to learn and achieve dreams amid limited circumstances.

Unlike other key regions in the archipelago, South Papua has its backcountry areas and their lack of road access complicating equitable education efforts. Financial constraints also hinder local households from providing proper learning resources.

“Sometimes, my parents had to put other needs first so I couldn’t buy books or pencils [as I’d like]. Now, I’ve got new books, good pens, and rulers; I don’t need to borrow them anymore and can focus on studying,” Ida said, her eyes sparkling.

Her dad, David Igiti, added that meeting education needs is challenging from a parent’s perspective, especially with financial hardships. He had to work harder than most people to support his growing family. For that reason, David was grateful for the scholarship aid.

“We would like to thank TSE Group. This scholarship would greatly benefit us in covering expenses like school supplies. It means a lot,” he said when visiting TSE Group’s office in Asiki Subvillage.

The program is part of TSE Group’s support for South Papua’s education system. In addition to easing financial burden on families, it also encourages indigenous students to rise against the odds.

Education is at the heart of TSE Group’s “social contribution” strategy, said Public Relations General Manager Daniel Sim Ayomi. Through scholarships, the company hopes to help bright, competitive Papuans reach for success.

“We believe education lays the foundation for the youth’s future. We strive to provide better access to schooling in our operational areas,” Ayomi said.

Ida’s story demonstrates how a bit of support can go a long way in reigniting hope in young Papuans for a better life. That’s why the South Papuan-based company is committed to building social environments through Corporate Social Contribution programs like this. (PR)
