BOVEN DIGOEL – Indonesia is one of the world’s most megadiverse countries, with many plant and animal varieties exclusive to this region. Yet, it has its fair share of threats to this biodiversity.
Human intervention, such as illegal land use changes and unsustainable extraction of resources (e.g. exploitation of animals, plants, and other organisms that leads to their demise), has brought on the decline of local flora and fauna.
As an oil palm plantation operator in the Birds-of-Paradise Land, Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE) Group takes a number of strategic initiatives to maintain ecological balance. These efforts include inviting the younger generation into taking part in biodiversity conservation.
The company is working hard to promote habitat preservation through various opportunities, like local school visits.
“[Making] the youth well-versed in environmental protection” was an event held for agribusiness, agrotechnology, and management students at SMK Negeri 3 Boven Digoel (Boven Digoel 3 Public Vocational High) in Getentiri Subvillage, Jair District, Boven Digoel Regency, South Papua on Friday (3/1).
“Birds-of-paradise, cassowaries, black-capped lories, strawberry finches, tree kangaroos (including Doria’s tree kangaroos), and agarwood trees are endemic or rare species that are the most widespread in Boven Digoel, South Papua. It is our duty to ensure these natural treasures survive,” said TSE Group’s ISPO assistant manager Raja Surya Pangestu Aritonang at the campaign.
