MERAUKE – There were over 9,000 cases of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) in the span of six months (January – June 2023), Papua Province’s Health Service reported. The disease was found in 29 regencies and cities in Papua, including those in Highland Papua, Central Papua, and South Papua.

In an attempt to improve health quality standards and productivity, TSE Group and its subsidiary PT. Dongin Prabhawa (DP) rolled out a free health service in the (sub)villages of Nakias and Tagaepe in Ngguti District, Merauke Regency, on August 12-13.

Doctors and staff from DP’s clinic worked fast to deliver medical help to both communities. This included a health class, checkup, and drug and vitamin provision, offered at zero cost.

Nakias housewife Opra Yolmen shared how she and the locals must take a one hour journey to get medication and healthcare at Ngguti’s puskesmas (integrated health service).

“There are visits from the puskesmas team, but these take place once a month because of the poor road access. So, today I’m thankful for the free treatment from Dongin Prabhawa,” Yolmen said.

After two days of mass check-ups, DP’s clinic doctor dr. Achma Nur Affendick revealed their findings to the PR team.

“Most of the people are suffering from upper respiratory tract infection or what we call URTI, with complaints of coughs, sneezes, and fever. This is caused by prolonged exposure to smoke, which happens as locals still cook in a traditional way, using firewood. Over time, this smoke can block the airways.”
