SOUTH PAPUA – In time for the 80th anniversary of Independence Day, Papua Argo Lestari (PAL) invited nearby communities to participate in traditional games.
Taking place on August 3 and 7, “Preserving Local Elements in Modern Games” aimed to maintain local traditions while introducing them to a wider, non-native audience. One game included archery, which plays a big part in the indigenous Papuan life.
This competition was a major attraction for participants and spectators. After all, archery is central to the local culture; it’s used for hunting, gathering food, and completing rites.
On the other hand, PAL hosted a fishing contest to encourage bonding and balance the intense atmosphere from the first game. Through this event, the company hoped to strengthen ties with the people, build a sense of sportsmanship, and foster cultural pride.
“We believe technological advancements and modern practices shouldn’t disconnect us from our roots. Through [these games, especially] traditional archery, we want to encourage younger people here to learn and embrace their cultural heritage,” said PAL representative Eko Setiawan.
There was excitement from the start. Archery participant Markus expressed his happiness, “It’s great to be participating. Traditional archery is not just about skill, but also respect for what is passed down to us from our parents and ancestors. I’m glad that PAL wanted to do something [contests] like this.”
Papua Agro Lestari remains committed to safeguarding local culture through annual events that align with its vision of achieving sustainable development in Papua. (PR)
