We’re thrilled to announce this edition of TSE Magazine. “Energy Transition for Zero-Emission Industry” encapsulates the changing landscape of plantation operations and urgent need for oil palm farms to remain competitive while demonstrating greater environmental accountability.

It’s a title that reflects our 2025 milestone: building Papua’s first biogas plant. This site not only marks a breakthrough in technology — it also opens a new chapter in East Indonesia’s oil palm waste management journey. Its use of effluent to generate energy proves the power of innovation to drive emissions reduction.

Much of this work, and similar initiatives, can be found in this issue. Our stories shed light on the ways we promote energy transition and deepen our ESG commitments to ensure every action impacts people, planet, and profit long-term.

We have implemented environmental, social, and governance principles through our annual scholarship program with the Oil Palm Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS) — which last year sent Papuan students to Yogyakarta Agricultural Community Academy (AKPY) to study oil palms.

In Halmahera, our community farm reaped its first crop of corn as part of Indonesia’s food security scheme. We harvested in large quantities after a three-month planting period.

These accounts of our activities are meant to offer an in-depth perspective on the transformation of TSE Group into a more innovative, competitive, and environmentally friendly enterprise.

We hope this spread empowers more industry members, stakeholders, and general readers to see biogas as a future energy source and local innovation. May our stories start conversations, encourage reflection, and inspire progress towards a zero-emission industry.

“Net Zero Emission” reflects both a global trend and a timely call to engage in moral and environmental responsibility as palm oil stakeholders. It asks us to contemplate the transformations in our industry and move further into a low-carbon, productive business practice.

But above all, it reminds us of the crossroads at which the industry stands. One path encourages the continuation of an establishment that has powered millions of livelihoods and generated foreign exchange income. The other presents a reality of such choice, forcing us to face the climate impacts, environmental pressures, and sustainability demands that follow.

Our response as TSE Group has been to balance these interests, ensuring a sustainable and responsible operation that aligns our growth with community development and nature preservation.

We’re doing this through our switch to electric transport, biogas plant projects, reduced use of chemical fertilizers, and Papua Lestari — aboat designed to support our research with IPB University on South Papua’s pig-nosed turtles and greater birds-of-paradise.

Our POME-to-biogas plants will especially help us manage production waste better and create a practical energy solution. It marks an important point in the journey towards our vision and net-zero emissions.

These actions prove how low-carbon transitions are possible with hard work, collaboration, and long-term commitment. As milestones in our journey, they are documented in this edition of TSE Magazine to enable greater awareness, dialogue, and cross-sectoral work.

We believe the future of this industry — at least in Indonesia — lies in its ability to adapt and innovate. No longer a pipe dream, zero emissions has become a necessity, and we hope to contribute to its success.

Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR, is a concept that evolves with the development of the business world and community needs. Its purpose stretches beyond building and maintaining rapport with the people.

Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE) Group defines it as a contribution to improving community quality of life, through “pillars” of economy, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and environment.

This contribution takes many forms, such as free health screening and treatment for Papua’s remote communities. Anyone, including children, can walk into our health camps to get themselves checked or receive medical care. At these events, the little ones also learn proper teeth-brushing and other healthy habits.

Meanwhile, in South Halmahera, TSE Group subsidiary PT Gelora Mandiri Membangun (PT GMM) lights up the skies above nearby villages with electric generator donations, which make up for the lack of electricity provided by state energy company PLN. These diesel-powered machines supply power to homes for things like lighting, phone charging, and rice cooking.

On last year’s Christmas Eve, PT GMM also came through with generator fuel to help eight churches in four villages (Yamli, Sekely, Yomen, Jibubu) conduct services with the lights on.

All of these actions are rooted in the belief that businesses as a legal entity have a responsibility for furthering human rights values and elevating the lives of their workers.

Also, we realize the benefits of practicing social responsibility, such as avoiding the reputation of a short-term profit seeker with no consideration for the environment and people. Engaging in CSR activities will bring respect from communities that rely on the presence of a company.

This symbiosis between corporations and society is worth looking at from the lens of equality and beauty — you can see this in this edition of TSE Magazine.

2023 was an exceptional year. We carved a historical milestone by pledging to take part in the global net zero emissions movement until 2050.

We base our commitment on the belief that net zero emissions are only achievable through teamwork and innovation from all parts of the palm oil value chain, not excluding palm oil companies.

To demonstrate such promise, we use Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) standards to define our emissions goals. SBTi is an initiative that develops and promotes scientific methods to align corporate emissions targets with the Paris Agreement.

With this tool, we will set objectives and take necessary actions to limit global warming to below 1.5°C. Our company will also report the progress of these actions in a transparent and consistent manner through the SBTi platform and other relevant mechanisms.

Net zero emissions commitments carry an urgency for immediate fulfilment as public attention on climate change and global warming grows. Taking this pledge is one thing we do to walk in harmony with nature and people. With utmost care and attention, we craft empowerment programs to improve the quality of life and make Earth a safer place to live in.

Our steps towards these goals are documented in TSE Magazine, which you can access from your fingertips. Of course, the efforts won’t stop here. We will bring you more actions and innovations as we move towards becoming a better company.

Nowadays, greenhouse effect reduction is a hotly-discussed topic. Whether you realize it or not, the impacts of GHGs are increasingly felt in everyday lives, posing a real threat to mankind.

They encompass weather anomalies, extreme weather events, higher Earth temperatures, melting glaciers in the poles, and increased risks of wildfires and heavy rain worldwide — all of which can further exacerbate living conditions if stakeholders are unwilling to take steps to restore the surrounding nature.

With this in mind, Tunas Sawa Erma Group (TSE Group) wholeheartedly takes part in efforts to limit these effects by committing to Net Zero Emissions 2050. This commitment is based on the awareness and belief that achieving net zero emissions is possible through teamwork and innovation from all players in the palm oil value chain.

To demonstrate such a promise, TSE Group uses Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) standards to define its emissions goals. SBTi is an initiative that develops and promotes scientific methods to align corporate emissions targets with the Paris Agreement.

The palm oil firm also adheres to local rules and regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets of 29% below business-as-usual or 41% with international help, set to be achieved by 2030.

Aware of the significant impact we can create, we decided to take on the theme of “Net Zero Emissions” in this edition of TSE Magazine. We’d like to encourage our counterparts to join us in this endeavor to lower greenhouse gas impacts both at home and abroad.

Salute to our readers. Leaving the year behind (and heading into the next) can bring a mixed bag of emotions. It may feel challenging to move on from 2022, given its unforgettable events and memories, but at the same time, we are excited about what 2023 has in store.

Joy, worry, gratitude—all these come together like splashes of color on a blank sheet called the New Year, distinct yet intertwined in a beautiful hue that evokes passion and courage.

It is this hue, this zeal, that drives TSE Group to strive hard and complete meaningful, important work.

For us, this “important work” isn’t always about managing and growing a business on a larger scale. It’s also about sharing with our surroundings and doing more valuable things for people and nature.

In 2022, Tunas Sawa Erma Group worked hard to foster a healthy and harmonious relationship with the local communities. We spent a great deal of time listening to wishes and aspirations, talking heart to heart, giving the help they need, and contributing ideas that would be beneficial for all.

The Company also took an active stance in protecting the surrounding environment by organizing river clean-ups alongside the people. In the event near Guiss Village, Ulilin District (Merauke Regency), TSE Group and Guiss residents worked side by side picking up trash and cleaning the Rawa Kasat river. We did this with the awareness that a clean environment reflects the society’s quality of life and guarantees the health of its individuals.

Hormat kami kepada seluruh pembaca. Masa sulit karena pandemi tak menyurutkan langkah kami untuk melakukan pemberdayaan sebagai bukti kepedulian perusahaan kepada masyarakat Papua. Dalam semangat berbagi sebisa mungkin kami hadir untuk membantu saudara-saudara kita yang kurang beruntung.

Tak kurang ratusan paket bantuan dari TSE Group telah didistribusikan dan dinikmati oleh masyarakat yang berhak. Paket tersebut berisi bahan-bahan keperluan pokok, termasuk minyak goreng yang beberapa saat lalu sempat langka di pasaran. Maupun bantuan bibit pohon buah dan ternak untuk meningkatkan ekonomi masyarakat Papua.

Tidak sampai di situ, perusahaan juga menyediakan bantuan pemberdayaan masyarakat lewat penyuluhan HAM pada Desember 2021 lalu. TSE Group menggandeng Komisi Nasional Hak Asasi Manusia (Komnas HAM) Papua untuk memberikan materi penyuluhan dan pelatihan HAM terhadap masyarakat pemilik hak ulayat. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk membantu masyarakat adat untuk tak sekadar mengatahui tapi juga memahami apa yang menjadi hak mereka terhadap perusahaan dan bagaimana penerapannya.

Masyarakat juga kami ajak untuk menyadari pentingnya menjaga kesehatan melalui aksi penyuluhan yang dilakukan hingga ke pedalaman Papua.

Bersama dokter-dokter andalan yang berpraktik di Klinik perusahaan, sesulit apapun medan yang dilalui, tak ragu kami terjun langsung ke lapangan.
Di sela-sela kegiatan penyuluhan dan pemeriksaan kesehatan gratis ini, perusahaan juga meluangkan waktu untuk menjalin komunikasi yang berkualitas bersama masyarakat. Sesi komunikasi ini terbilang penting, karena tak jarang menghasilkan transfer pengetahuan yang bermanfaat bagi kedua belah pihak.

Mencerdaskan masyarakat melalui pendidikan dan pelatihan memang menjadi salah satu pilar penting dalam program Corporate Social Contribution (CSC) yang diusung oleh TSE Group. Penerapannya tercermin dalam kegiatan-kegiatan yang dilakukan perusahaan di tanah Papua.

Kami memahami bahwa mencerdaskan masyarakat melalui program pemberdayaan penting untuk dilakukan. We present the first edition of the magazine, Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE) Group, Edition 01, that will represent the company’s expansion effort. This magazine will be a masterpiece of information distribution on the company’s activities, programs, progress, and achievements that have been successfully carved by the TSE Group.

We are very concerned about a range of preventive actions against the spread of the coronavirus. Through Corporate Social Contributions (CSC) programs, various efforts have been made to break the COVID-19 chain, such as spraying disinfectants and helping in vaccination acceleration in the Boven Digoel region.

Additionally, other innovations that have been carried out by TSE Group, including PT Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE), PT Dongin Prabhawa (DP), and PT Berkat Cipta Abadi (BCA) are greening program in Boven Digoel region by planting fruit trees together with the locals. Not only environmental issues, TSE Group also cares about the issue of education and welfare of the local community. Starting from providing thousands of stationery for students in remote areas, to job training and provision of opportunities for residents in Boven Digoel who want to work at TSE Group.

This magazine is our attempt to summarize all of them in a meticulous way.
